The mission of GR!DSM is to create an environment that enables girls to collaborate creatively in an environment of mutual respect and positive self-expression and to build self-esteem through music creation and performance.  GR!DSM will provide workshops and technical training, create leadership opportunities, cultivate a supportive community of peers and mentors, and encourage social change and the development of life skills through music.

Chrysalis Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, is the fiscal sponsor for Girls Rock! Des Moines.

The first Rock ’n’ Roll Camp for Girls was founded in 2001 by a Portland State University student as a summer day camp. In 2003, the organization moved into its own space in Northeast Portland and, in an effort to further fulfill the mission of the organization, launched the Girls Rock Institute, an after-school program that provides more opportunities for girls to get involved throughout the year.  Currently, there are over 40 camps in the US, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Austria, France, and Iceland.

GR!DSM is an independent day camp modeled after the original Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls.  It began as an idea nearly 5 years ago, after Camp Director and local musician, Rae Fehring, saw the Girls Rock! documentary.  With the support of the Des Moines Social Club and the Des Moines Music Coalition, GR!DSM was able to launch it's first year in 2013 with it's first summer session and their support carried into the second year. In 2014, GR!DSM has partnered with Chrysalis Foundation and brought you TWO sessions! We are really looking forward to more growth in 2015, stay tuned!!

The Camp

GR!DSM is a two week summer day camp for girls age 10 to 16.  Girls 17 – 18 who are still enrolled in high school can apply to be a Counselor in Training (CIT).

GR!DSM campers are instructed their choice of guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, vocal, or dj and participate in workshops that encourage freedom of expression, greater self-esteem, and developing life skills through music.

Campers will also form a band that will record and perform an original song at the end of camp showcase.  Partial to full need based scholarships will be available.  We encourage campers to bring their own instruments; however, if a camper does not have one, GR!DSM will provide a loaned instrument to the camper for the duration of camp free of charge.
